How do I access my digital materials?

All digital course materials are immediately available on Canvas.

  1. Log in to Canvas using a web browser.
  2. In the left navigation, go to Account → My Shelf (Fall 2026).

Where can I get my physical materials?

If a physical book is required, you can purchase it from the retailer of your choice.

When you buy from the UNM Bookstores, your printed course materials are tax-free, and it’s easy to find exactly what you need: books are organized by department, course, and section, so you can quickly locate the correct materials for your classes.

How will I be charged for my digital materials?

Beginning two weeks before classes start, or when you register (whichever comes later), the cost of your selected digital course materials will be automatically charged to your UNM Student Bursar account.

Can I get a physical copy of a digital material?

For some courses, optional print upgrades may be available. If offered, you can purchase a physical copy of the textbook through the UNM Bookstore for an additional cost. Availability varies by course and publisher.

Will I keep access to my digital materials after the course ends?

It depends on the type of material.

  • Many digital textbooks allow continued access and may be downloadable for use after the course ends.
  • Digital courseware (such as McGraw-Hill Connect or Pearson MyLab) is typically available only for the semester in which it is assigned.

Should I opt out of my course materials if I drop the class?

No. If you drop a class before the opt-out deadline, any Course Materials Access charges associated with that class will be automatically refunded, and your access to the course materials will be removed. There is no need to opt out of the materials yourself. Simply dropping the class will trigger the refund process automatically.

Change your access:

If you decide you do not want access to one of your digital course materials, you can opt out before the add/drop deadline with 100% tuition refund.

How to opt out of an item?

If you do not wish to keep access to a required digital course material, you may opt out before the opt-out deadline (see below).

  1. Log in to Canvas using a web browser.
  2. Open your My Shelf (Fall 2026).
  3. Locate the digital course material you want to opt out of.
  4. In the right-hand section of the item, click Opt Out.

Refunds will appear on your Bursar account within 2–3 business days.

Once you opt out, a padlock icon will appear on the item. This indicates that you no longer have access to the digital material. A refund for that item will be processed to your UNM Bursar account, typically within 2–3 business days.
Changed your mind? You can opt back in before the add/drop deadline using the same steps. The button will display “Opt In.”

Before opting out, make sure the material is not required to complete assignments, quizzes, exams, or course activities, as opting out will remove your access.

Deadline to opt-out:

  • Full term: Sept. 4
  • 1st Half: Aug. 28
  • 2nd Half: Oct. 23
